Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of therapy does Changes offer?

Changes offers individual and group therapy using evidence-based methods, including CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed care. Therapy is delivered within our PHP and IOP programs rather than as standalone weekly sessions. Many clients find that their needs are better met by exploring options beyond traditional therapy.

Both. You work one-on-one with a clinician in individual therapy and take part in group sessions with peers. The two connect to the same treatment plan, so your individual and group work reinforce each other.

Yes. Addiction and trauma are often connected, so our clinicians use trauma-informed care to address both at once. Treating substance use without addressing underlying trauma tends to leave recovery fragile.

Therapy addresses substance use alongside co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, and trauma, treating both together rather than in isolation.

Most major insurance plans cover therapy delivered within a treatment program with prior authorization. Changes verifies your benefits in about 15 minutes, free and confidential, and private-pay options are available.

Call (949) 807-2008 or verify your insurance online. After a clinical assessment, your team recommends the right program and builds your therapy plan around it.

What therapy at Changes involves

Therapy at Changes combines individual sessions and group work. In individual therapy, you meet one-on-one with a clinician to work through the specific issues driving substance use or affecting your mental health. In group therapy, you build the peer support and accountability that make recovery durable, and you practice new skills with people working toward the same goals.

Rather than a standalone weekly appointment, therapy at Changes is built into a structured program. Your individual and group sessions connect to the same treatment plan, so nothing happens in isolation. What surfaces in a one-on-one session can be carried into group work, and the skills you practice in group can be refined individually. Your clinical team tracks progress across both and adjusts your plan as you move through PHP and IOP. Medication management is an essential part of ensuring that all aspects of your treatment are aligned.

This integrated approach is the difference between talking about recovery once a week and living inside a structure built to support it. Because sessions are frequent and connected, patterns show up faster and get addressed sooner, which is what gives program-based therapy its clinical strength.

Who therapy at Changes is for

Therapy at Changes is for adults working through substance use, a mental health condition, or both at the same time. It fits people who want more than a weekly appointment can offer and who benefit from consistent, structured clinical support while they live at home.

Many people arrive recognizing patterns they cannot break on their own, the sense of being addicted to self-sabotage, repeating the same choices despite wanting something different. Others come in carrying trauma that sits underneath their substance use. Therapy at Changes is built to address both the surface behavior and the reasons underneath it.

Therapies we use

Our clinicians use evidence-based therapies matched to each client’s needs. Each one does a specific job, and most clients work with more than one over the course of a program.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is the foundation. It helps you identify the thoughts and patterns that drive substance use, then build healthier responses you can apply day to day. For people caught in cycles of self-sabotage, CBT is the practical tool that makes those patterns visible and changeable rather than automatic.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT teaches emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal skills. It is especially useful for clients managing intense emotions or co-occurring mental health conditions, and the skills it builds keep working long after the program ends.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing strengthens your own reasons for change rather than imposing them from outside. It matters most early in treatment, when commitment is still forming and ambivalence is normal.

Trauma-informed care

Addiction and trauma are often tied together, and treating one without the other tends to leave recovery fragile. Trauma-informed care means our clinicians account for how past experiences shape present behavior, so treatment supports stability rather than reopening old wounds. Relapse-prevention work runs alongside all of it.

Conditions we address

Therapy at Changes treats substance use alongside co-occurring mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. Treating both together matters, because addiction and mental health conditions often reinforce each other, and addressing only one tends to leave the other to pull recovery off track. Our clinicians build a plan that holds both in view from the first assessment forward.

What a typical week of therapy looks like

A week of therapy at Changes combines individual sessions, group sessions, and skills-based work, delivered on the schedule of whichever program you are in. In PHP, therapy runs several hours a day, five days a week. In IOP, it runs 9 to 15 hours across several days. Both build the week around the same core: one-on-one time to go deep on your own situation, group time to practice and be held accountable, and skills sessions focused on the practical work of staying well.

Because you return home between sessions, therapy is not confined to a room. You take what you work on into daily life, then bring real situations back into the next session. That loop, practice and review, is where lasting change is built.

Where therapy fits with our programs

Therapy is the clinical core of both levels of care at Changes. It is delivered through our Partial Hospitalization Program for clients who need daily structure, and through our Intensive Outpatient Program for those ready for fewer hours a week. As clients stabilize, therapy continues through aftercare and support groups.

Insurance and cost

Changes Treatment Center works with most major insurance providers, and we verify benefits on any plan in about 15 minutes. Most commercial plans cover therapy delivered within a treatment program with prior authorization, though exact coverage depends on your specific plan.

The fastest way to know what you would pay is to let us check for you. Verification is free and carries no obligation. If you do not have coverage that works, we offer private-pay options and will talk through the most realistic path on a confidential call.

Addiction and mental health therapy in Costa Mesa and Orange County

Orange County recorded an estimated 490 accidental overdose deaths in 2023, and its opioid overdose death rate nearly tripled between 2017 and 2021, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency. The agency notes that cities along the coastal and southern parts of the county, Costa Mesa among them, tend to see higher rates of drug- and alcohol-related hospitalizations than inland areas. Consistent, evidence-based therapy is part of closing that gap.

Changes Treatment Center is at 2787 Bristol Street in Costa Mesa, serving adults across Orange County. Insurance verification takes about 15 minutes, and most clients can begin within a few days.

Quiz: Could It Be Both?

When we are struggling with deep stress, anxious thoughts, or a low mood, it is incredibly natural to look for immediate relief. Sometimes, we turn to alcohol or other substances just to quiet our minds, get some sleep, or feel normal for a night.

This short self-assessment is designed to help you pause and look at how these two parts of your life might be influencing each other. It is entirely anonymous and takes less than two minutes.

If you answered "Yes" to more than one question:

Reflecting on how your experiences connect

This quick, 10-question check-in is a quiet space to reflect honestly on how your use is impacting your life. It is entirely anonymous, completely free of clinical judgment, and takes less than two minutes.
