Frequently Asked Questions

Is FirstHealth an insurance company?

No. FirstHealth is a national PPO provider network, not an insurance plan. Your coverage comes from the health plan that uses the FirstHealth network. We identify that plan and verify your benefits for you.

Coverage comes from the plan behind the FirstHealth network, and most such plans cover outpatient therapy, psychiatry, IOP, and PHP. We verify your specific plan at no cost so you know exactly what is covered.

Most plans that use FirstHealth show the FirstHealth logo on the insurance card. If you see it, your plan likely uses that network for in-network providers. We can confirm this when we verify your benefits.

Most plans that use the FirstHealth network cover both Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization (PHP), though the details depend on your underlying plan. We confirm which levels are covered during verification.

Most plans that use the FirstHealth network cover medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders. Because rules vary by plan, we confirm your specific benefits before treatment begins.

Verification takes a few minutes of your time. Our team identifies your plan, confirms your benefits, and calls you back with your coverage details, often the same day.

If your plan does not fully cover the care you need, we review private pay options and work with you on a path forward. Call (949) 807-2008 to discuss your situation.

What FirstHealth Is and How Coverage Works

FirstHealth is a national PPO provider network, not an insurance plan, so your coverage comes from the health plan that uses the FirstHealth network rather than from FirstHealth itself.

Many self-funded employer plans and smaller carriers rent the FirstHealth network to give members access to in-network providers. If your insurance card shows the FirstHealth logo, it usually means your plan uses that network to determine which providers are in network and at what rate. Your actual benefits, including which levels of care are covered and what you pay, are set by your underlying plan. Most plans that use FirstHealth cover the outpatient levels of care we provide: individual and group therapy, psychiatric care with medication management, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). Federal parity law requires most plans to cover behavioral health at the same level as medical and surgical care, which is why we verify your specific plan before treatment begins.

Mental Health and Therapy Coverage

Plans that use the FirstHealth network generally cover therapy and psychiatric care as a core part of your behavioral health benefit.

Most cover individual therapy, group therapy, and psychiatric care with medication management for conditions including depression, anxiety, trauma, and co-occurring mental health and substance use. Treatment at Changes uses evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and motivational interviewing, all delivered by licensed clinicians and covered under your behavioral health benefit. Because coverage depends on your underlying plan and the FirstHealth network, we verify which services and providers are covered before you begin.

Levels of Care We Cover Through the FirstHealth Network

FirstHealth network access applies across the outpatient continuum at Changes, from therapy and psychiatry through structured day treatment.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the most structured outpatient option, giving you several hours of clinical programming a day while you live at home or in supportive housing. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a step down, built for people balancing treatment with work or family. We also provide individual and group therapy and psychiatric care with medication management for people who need ongoing support. Whether these levels are covered depends on medical necessity and how your underlying plan is built. If you need detox before starting outpatient care, we help coordinate placement with trusted partners, then bring you into our program when you are ready.

How to Verify Your FirstHealth Network Benefits

Verifying your coverage takes a few minutes of your time, and our team handles the rest.

What You'll Pay

Your cost depends on the plan behind the FirstHealth network, and we give you the full picture before you commit to anything.

Because the FirstHealth network is used by many different plans, your deductible, copay or coinsurance, and annual out-of-pocket maximum vary based on your specific plan. Once you have met your deductible, most plans cover a share of each session or treatment day, with you responsible for the copay or coinsurance until you reach your out-of-pocket maximum. Rather than quote a number that may not match your plan, we verify your benefits and tell you what to expect before treatment begins. There is no cost to verify and no obligation to enroll.

Quiz: Could It Be Both?

When we are struggling with deep stress, anxious thoughts, or a low mood, it is incredibly natural to look for immediate relief. Sometimes, we turn to alcohol or other substances just to quiet our minds, get some sleep, or feel normal for a night.

This short self-assessment is designed to help you pause and look at how these two parts of your life might be influencing each other. It is entirely anonymous and takes less than two minutes.

If you answered "Yes" to more than one question:

Reflecting on how your experiences connect

Answering "yes" to one or more of these questions can be a sign that your mental health and substance use are deeply intertwined. When anxiety, depression, or stress connect with alcohol or drug use, they often feed into one another in a cycle. Recognizing this link is a powerful and brave step toward finding a path that heals both at the same time.

  • A gentle next step: You don’t have to separate these struggles or try to fix them one by one. True recovery looks at the whole picture, and starting with a simple, honest conversation can offer immense relief.
  • Let's talk it through: We have compassionate, real people ready to listen and walk alongside you. Whether your goal is to find balance, heal from trauma, or address both mental health and substance use together—we are here with zero judgment and absolute confidentiality.

Quiz: Do I Have a Substance Use Problem?

It’s common for habits to slowly shift over time, especially during stressful seasons. Often, we find ourselves using a substance to cope, unwind, or get through the day, only to realize it is starting to take up more space in our routine, thoughts, or relationships than we’d like.

This quick, 10-question check-in is a quiet space to reflect honestly on how your use is impacting your life. It is entirely anonymous, completely free of clinical judgment, and takes less than two minutes.

If you answered "Yes" to more than one question:

We all experience days when we feel down, exhausted, or just completely unmotivated. But when those heavy feelings start lingering, it can be hard to tell if you’re just going through a rough patch or if it’s something more.

This quick, confidential check-in is designed to help you pause and reflect on how you’ve actually been feeling lately. It is completely anonymous, entirely non-judgmental, and takes less than two minutes.

Finding a gentle path forward

Answering "yes" to one or more of these questions can be a sign that a heavy mood, low energy, or a sense of exhaustion has started to weave its way into your daily life.
