Frequently Asked Questions

Does Aetna cover rehab at Changes Treatment Center?

Changes works with Aetna to cover outpatient addiction treatment, including PHP, IOP, therapy, and psychiatry. Aetna plans generally cover these services under your behavioral health benefit, and we verify exactly what your plan covers at no cost.

Yes. Aetna plans generally cover individual therapy, group therapy, and psychiatric care with medication management. Coverage typically includes treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma, and co-occurring conditions. Your copay and visit limits depend on your plan.

Most Aetna plans cover both Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization (PHP) programs under your behavioral health benefit. We confirm which levels your specific plan covers when we verify your benefits.

Yes. Aetna plans generally cover treatment for alcohol use disorder, including the outpatient levels of care we provide. Coverage for detox placement, if you need it first, is confirmed during verification.

Aetna plans generally cover medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders. Because coverage and prior-authorization rules vary by plan, we confirm your specific benefits before treatment begins.

Yes. Aetna plans generally cover integrated treatment for co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions, which is a core part of how we treat clients at Changes. We verify your specific coverage during benefits verification.

Most Aetna plans do not require a referral for outpatient addiction or mental health treatment, though some require one for certain levels of care. We check this for you during verification so there are no surprises.

Verification takes a few minutes of your time. Our team contacts Aetna directly and calls you back with your coverage details, often the same day.

Your cost depends on your plan’s deductible, copay, and out-of-pocket maximum. We contact Aetna, confirm your cost share, and explain it in plain terms before you commit to anything.

If your plan does not fully cover the care you need, we review private pay options and work with you on a path forward. Call (949) 807-2008 to discuss your situation.

What Aetna Covers for Treatment

Aetna plans generally cover outpatient addiction and mental health treatment, and we work with Aetna to put those benefits toward care at Changes.

Most Aetna plans cover the outpatient levels of care we provide: our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), individual and group therapy, and psychiatric care with medication management. Federal parity law requires most plans to cover behavioral health at the same level as medical and surgical care, so your addiction and mental health coverage is generally treated like any other medical benefit. Aetna administers these benefits through Aetna Behavioral Health, and the specifics of your coverage, including any prior authorization, depend on whether you have a commercial, employer, or marketplace plan. What you pay depends on your specific plan, which is why we verify your benefits before treatment begins.

Levels of Care Aetna Covers With Us

Aetna benefits apply across the outpatient continuum at Changes, from day treatment through ongoing therapy and psychiatry.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the most structured outpatient option, giving you several hours of clinical programming a day while you live at home or in supportive housing. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a step down, built for people balancing treatment with work or family. We also provide individual and group therapy and psychiatric care with medication management for people who need ongoing support. Most Aetna plans cover each of these levels, though the number of days or sessions covered depends on medical necessity and your specific plan. If you need detox before starting outpatient care, we help coordinate placement with trusted partners, then bring you into our program when you are ready. We confirm which of these your Aetna plan covers when we verify your benefits.

How to Verify Your Aetna Benefits

Verifying your Aetna coverage takes a few minutes of your time, and our team handles the rest.

What You'll Pay With Aetna

Your cost with Aetna depends on your specific plan, and we give you the full picture before you commit to anything.

Aetna plans apply a deductible, a copay or coinsurance, and an annual out-of-pocket maximum to behavioral health care, and these vary from plan to plan. Once you have met your deductible, most plans cover a share of each treatment day or session, with you responsible for the copay or coinsurance until you reach your out-of-pocket maximum. Rather than quote a number that may not match your plan, we contact Aetna, confirm your cost share, and tell you what to expect before treatment begins. There is no cost to verify and no obligation to enroll.

Does Aetna Cover Therapy and Psychiatry?

Yes. Aetna plans generally cover individual therapy, group therapy, and psychiatric care with medication management as part of your behavioral health benefit.

This coverage typically extends to treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma, and co-occurring conditions alongside substance use, which is how many of our clients use their Aetna benefits. Treatment at Changes uses evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and motivational interviewing, all delivered by licensed clinicians and covered under your behavioral health benefit. Therapy and psychiatry are usually covered on the same behavioral health benefit as our PHP and IOP programs, so you can often move between levels of care without a separate approval. Your specific copay and any visit limits depend on your plan, and we verify all of it at no cost.

What If Aetna Doesn't Cover the Care You Need

If your Aetna plan does not fully cover the care you need, we work with you on your options rather than turning you away.

Our admissions team explains what your plan does cover, helps you understand any gaps, and reviews private pay so you have a complete picture before deciding. In some cases we can request a single-case agreement with Aetna or help you use benefits toward a different level of care that is covered. Call (949) 807-2008 and we will find a path forward together.

Quiz: Could It Be Both?

When we are struggling with deep stress, anxious thoughts, or a low mood, it is incredibly natural to look for immediate relief. Sometimes, we turn to alcohol or other substances just to quiet our minds, get some sleep, or feel normal for a night.

This short self-assessment is designed to help you pause and look at how these two parts of your life might be influencing each other. It is entirely anonymous and takes less than two minutes.

If you answered "Yes" to more than one question:

Reflecting on how your experiences connect

Answering "yes" to one or more of these questions can be a sign that your mental health and substance use are deeply intertwined. When anxiety, depression, or stress connect with alcohol or drug use, they often feed into one another in a cycle. Recognizing this link is a powerful and brave step toward finding a path that heals both at the same time.

  • A gentle next step: You don’t have to separate these struggles or try to fix them one by one. True recovery looks at the whole picture, and starting with a simple, honest conversation can offer immense relief.
  • Let's talk it through: We have compassionate, real people ready to listen and walk alongside you. Whether your goal is to find balance, heal from trauma, or address both mental health and substance use together—we are here with zero judgment and absolute confidentiality.

Quiz: Do I Have a Substance Use Problem?

It’s common for habits to slowly shift over time, especially during stressful seasons. Often, we find ourselves using a substance to cope, unwind, or get through the day, only to realize it is starting to take up more space in our routine, thoughts, or relationships than we’d like.

This quick, 10-question check-in is a quiet space to reflect honestly on how your use is impacting your life. It is entirely anonymous, completely free of clinical judgment, and takes less than two minutes.

If you answered "Yes" to more than one question:

We all experience days when we feel down, exhausted, or just completely unmotivated. But when those heavy feelings start lingering, it can be hard to tell if you’re just going through a rough patch or if it’s something more.

This quick, confidential check-in is designed to help you pause and reflect on how you’ve actually been feeling lately. It is completely anonymous, entirely non-judgmental, and takes less than two minutes.

Finding a gentle path forward
